Waco (Texas), July 19, 2021: Innovative Chess Solutions (ICS) successfully conducted the 2021 Waco Scholastic Chess Championship, at the Waco Convention Center, on Saturday, July 17, 2021. With sixty K-12 students participating, this event shattered the record for the largest chess tournament in the City of Waco. The prior record was originally set at the Waco Convention Center in 1973.
The tournament included players from fifteen counties. Among them, three residents of McLennan County won trophies. Dayton Mathews of Crawford High School won all five of his games and received first-place in the Unrated section. Joseph Schneider of China Spring Intermediate School received the fourth-place trophy in the U600 section. Logan Shafer, a local homeschooler, who served as the Chief Assistant Tournament Director, was awarded the first-place trophy in the Championship section and received the title of Waco Scholastic Chess Champion. This title is awarded to the highest scoring player in the Championship section who resides in McLennan County (or an adjacent county) and is intended to recognize the strongest local scholastic chess player.
Caleb Brown, a rising local homeschool high school junior, served as the Chief Tournament Director. He is the President/Founder of Innovative Chess Solutions and has been a certified tournament director since April 2019. It should also be mentioned that ICS’s reach is not confined only to the physical chessboard but extends to monthly online tournaments available to K-12 students throughout the world.
