Waco (Texas), April 7, 2023: Innovative Chess Solutions, LLC (ICS) announced today that the Texas Chess Association, Inc., approved its bid to hold the Texas Action Championship at the Waco Convention Center on July 22, 2023. This historic event will mark the first time an official state chess championship has been held in Waco since 2005 and the first time that the Texas Action Championship has been held since 2010.
This historic event will feature five rounds and a G/30;d5 time control. There will be four sections: Open, U1600, U1000 and U600. ICS is guaranteeing a prize fund of $700 for the Open section, including $500 for first place in the Open. Accordingly, this tournament will be one of the very few upcoming tournaments in Texas that qualify as a grand prix event. ICS will award 15 grand prix points (Enhanced) in the Open, with ten points for first and five points for second. In all other sections, the prizes will be based on thirty paid entries, with first place in each section receiving a projected $200 prize.
With the approval of the Texas Chess Association, ICS is starting the first ever Texas Blitz Championship, which will be held during the morning before the Texas Action Championship. This optional added event will provide players with an opportunity to be officially recognized as the best blitz player in Texas and to win cash prizes as well. It will also be a chance at a final warmup before the main event.
Entry fees start at only $28 ($38 for the Open section) and will remain at that level through May 20. As we near the day of the tournament, entry fees will dramatically increase so it is best to register now. However, all players will be given a full refund, no questions asked, if requested at any time until seven days before the tournament. Eventbrite fees are nonrefundable.
